What is Klonkt?

Klonkt is a lightweight, self-hosted platform for musicians and makers: your own blog, photos and music on your own domain — no algorithm, no ads.

Do I need to be technical to host it?

A little. Install it on a cheap VPS or with Docker, and a first-run wizard sets up your site in about a minute. Requires Node.js 20+ — the one-line installer sets it up for you.

Which VPS do you recommend?

We run Klonkt on Hetzner ourselves — cheap, reliable and EU-based. Any VPS with Node.js 20+ works (or Docker), but Hetzner is our pick.

Is it really free?

Yes. The full app and all updates are free and open source. A one-time $16 supporter pledge unlocks premium extras (newsletter, statistics and more) for life.

Can I host my own music?

Yes, with a built-in audio player for tracks, albums and playlists. A lite mode without audio also exists for blog-only sites on minimal hosting.

What are Circles?

Circles let separate, self-hosted Klonkt sites show each other's public posts — decentralized, with no central platform. You choose who you follow.

Is it fast — and does it scale?

Yes. Klonkt is lightweight: it runs on a small, cheap VPS with no separate database server (it uses SQLite). A single site easily handles real traffic, and a configured CDN (such as Cloudflare) absorbs big spikes — like a release going viral. And because everyone self-hosts their own site, there's no central bottleneck: the network scales by itself.
